Eastex Freeway Fatal Crash in Houston Headed to Harris County Grand Jury

A fatal crash on the Eastex Freeway service road in Houston will go to a Harris County grand jury, Houston police said. A 76-year-old man died after another driver rear-ended his car at a red light on October 23.

The crash happened about 4:45 p.m. in the 15900 block of the Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) service road. Police said the driver of the other vehicle showed no signs of intoxication.

How the crash happened

Investigators with the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division said a silver Chevrolet Spark was heading north and stopped at a red light. A white Hyundai Santa Fe, also heading north, hit the Chevrolet from behind.

The Hyundai also struck a black Nissan Altima in another lane, police said.

Houston Fire Department paramedics took the Chevrolet’s male driver to an area hospital. Doctors there pronounced him dead. A passenger in the Chevrolet also went to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Nissan’s driver drove to a hospital to be checked out.

Grand jury referral

Police consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which determined the case would go to a Harris County grand jury. Police did not announce any charges. The male driver of the Hyundai showed no signs of intoxication, according to the department.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has not yet identified the dead man. It will release his name after it notifies his family.

Sergeants F. Briones and Officer T. La of the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division reported the findings. The incident number is 704495626-W.
