Driver Arrested for DWI, Hit-and-Run After Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Austin

A pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run collision on Burleson Road, and the driver involved was later arrested and charged with DWI and Collision Involving Death. This incident marks Austin’s 35th fatal crash of 2025.
At approximately 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to the 4900 block of Burleson Road for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. When officers arrived, the driver of the vehicle had already fled the scene. The pedestrian, identified as 36-year-old Juan Mario Martinez-Hernandez, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Shortly thereafter, at 1:29 a.m., a caller contacted 9-1-1, admitting he had hit a pedestrian on Burleson Road. Officers responded to the caller’s apartment and made contact with Angelo Francisco Pinheiro, 34. After obtaining a statement, officers proceeded with a DWI investigation. Pinheiro was subsequently arrested and transported to the Travis County Jail, charged with DWI, a Class B misdemeanor, and Collision Involving Death, a second-degree felony.
This tragic event is being investigated as Austin’s 35th fatal crash of the year, contributing to 39 fatalities in 2025. For comparison, on the same date in 2024, Austin had recorded 29 fatal crashes resulting in 29 deaths.
