DPS Trooper Seizes 180 Bottles of Promethazine Syrup During Chambers County Traffic Stop

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — A routine traffic stop by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper in Southeast Texas led to the seizure of a large quantity of promethazine syrup commonly trafficked for illegal recreational use.

According to DPS, the stop resulted in the discovery of three suitcases filled with promethazine hydrochloride, a prescription medication often misused in illicit drug mixtures.

Inside the luggage, the trooper located:

  • 10 boxes
  • 12 bottles per box
  • An additional 60 individual bottles

Total seized: 180 bottles of promethazine hydrochloride

Authorities say the seizure prevented the drugs from reaching communities, schools, and neighborhoods across the region.

Promethazine hydrochloride is legally prescribed as an antihistamine and anti-nausea medication, but it is frequently trafficked for recreational misuse. The drug is commonly mixed with codeine cough syrup and soda to create the substance known as “Purple Drank,” “Lean,” or “Sizzurp,” a combination associated with sedative and euphoric effects.

DPS officials credited the trooper’s vigilance and proactive policing for the significant seizure, emphasizing that a single traffic stop can have a major impact on public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details have not yet been released.
