LAREDO — During an Operation Lone Star traffic stop in Webb County, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers arrested a convicted drug smuggler and illegal immigrant from Mexico.

On Friday, September 19, 2025, just after 11:00 a.m., a DPS trooper stopped a blue Volkswagen Jetta near Highway US 59 in Laredo. The driver, 41-year-old Leodan Martinez-Angeles of Mexico, was identified as an aggravated deported felon who had reentered the United States illegally after serving prison time for conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Martinez-Angeles was originally arrested in 2018 by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and convicted in 2019. Following his release, he was deported in 2020 but reentered the country in 2021.

Martinez-Angeles was taken into custody by DPS and subsequently turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
