Deputies’ Deliberate Crash Stops Wrong-Way Driver on East Freeway

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Ayala and Blair are being hailed as heroes after their quick actions prevented a potentially deadly wrong-way collision on the East Freeway.

Overnight, deputies received multiple calls regarding a wrong-way driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the 18900 block of East Freeway. Deputies Ayala and Blair located the vehicle and strategically positioned their patrol car to intercept it.

The wrong-way driver, identified as 23-year-old Nathan Arevalo, struck the deputies’ patrol car, bringing his vehicle to a stop and preventing further danger to other motorists. Arevalo was not injured.

The deputies observed signs of impairment and Arevalo was subsequently charged with DWI and booked into the Harris County Jail.
