Conroe Motel Shooting Suspect Arrested After Pursuit and SWAT Operation

Conroe, TX – A two-day investigation by Conroe Police has led to the arrest of a shooting suspect following a coordinated operation involving SWAT, Patrol, and the Crime Reduction Unit.
In the early morning hours of October 13, officers responded to a reported shooting at a local motel. Upon arrival, they located a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the face. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Through video surveillance and detailed investigative work, officers identified the suspect as 32-year-old Devonte Isaiah Hatchell of The Woodlands, TX, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On the evening of October 15, Conroe Police SWAT members, Patrol officers, and Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) personnel began surveillance on Hatchell at another local motel. When Hatchell was seen leaving in a vehicle, officers initiated a traffic stop in the 1600 block of South Frazier Street.
The driver complied and was detained without incident. However, the passenger, 21-year-old Kyla Evon Gambrell of Huntsville, TX, moved into the driver’s seat and fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. The chase ended near South Frazier Street and Foster, where Gambrell lost control, struck another vehicle, and crashed into a light pole. She surrendered immediately. Hatchell fled on foot into a nearby wooded area but was quickly apprehended by officers.
Hatchell now faces multiple charges stemming from the shooting and subsequent pursuit. Gambrell was also taken into custody and faces related charges.
Chief Jon C. Buckholtz praised the teamwork and professionalism of all involved units, stating, “I’m honored to work alongside so many dedicated and brave servants who focus daily on protecting the citizens of Conroe, despite the dangers they face. Strapping on a badge, gun, and bullet-resistant vest with the goal of returning home to your family while protecting others is the definition of a hero.”
