Brinks Guard Shot During ATM Robbery in Conroe; Suspect Dies After Shooting Himself

CONROE, Texas – A Brinks security guard remains in critical condition after being shot during an apparent robbery at a Conroe ATM Monday morning, while the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Officers with the Conroe Police Department responded around 8:23 a.m. on March 23, 2026, to a welfare check at a Bank of America ATM in the 1900 block of North Frazier Street. While en route, dispatchers received additional information from witnesses indicating a security guard had possibly been shot and that a gray pickup truck was seen leaving the scene.
When officers arrived, they found a Brinks security guard suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began life-saving measures. The victim, identified as 59-year-old Quang Truong of Spring, was transported by Montgomery County Hospital District EMS to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.
As officers secured the scene, Conroe Police Communications began receiving tracking data from 3SI systems embedded in the stolen money boxes. Using that information, officers coordinated with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate the suspect vehicle.
The gray Dodge pickup was found in the 5000 block of North Interstate 45. Authorities conducted a felony traffic stop involving patrol units, investigators, sheriff’s deputies, and DPS troopers.
Before officers approached the vehicle, the suspect—described as a 41-year-old white male—shot himself in the head. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. His identity has not been released.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the Conroe Police Department with assistance from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI.
“This is a terrible tragedy for this victim and his family,” said Conroe Police Chief Jon Buckholtz. “This morning he left his home to do his job, having no idea that a suspect would value money over his life. He was gunned down in a callous moment of greed and we pray for his recovery and we are thankful for the fact that he is still alive. We look forward to seeing him reunited with his family, and we ask you to pray for him, his family, and his doctors.”
