BARC Launches Tiered Volunteer Program for 2024: A New Opportunity to Save Lives at Houston’s Animal Shelter

BARC Launches Tiered Volunteer Program for 2024: A New Opportunity to Save Lives at Houston’s Animal Shelter

BARC, the City of Houston’s Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, is calling on animal enthusiasts to usher in the new year by becoming part of their newly introduced Tiered Volunteer Program. Scheduled to kick off in 2024, this program offers a range of opportunities for volunteers of all experience levels to contribute to the well-being of shelter animals.

The tiered system comprises four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and the unique BARC Buddies tier. This last tier caters to volunteers who may be unable or choose not to handle larger animals but are still eager to assist in other capacities within the shelter.

BARC’s Shelter Director, Jarrad Mears, expressed excitement about the program, stating, “Our tiered program is here to make it as easy as possible for volunteers to jump right in and lend a paw at the shelter. By organizing volunteers into groups based on their level of experience and time dedicated, we aim to create a supportive environment for everyone involved.”

For those who are new or unfamiliar with animal handling, the Beginner level provides an opportunity to learn from experienced volunteers in the Advanced levels, some of whom have dedicated decades to supporting BARC. The shelter also offers regular training courses to help participants gain a better understanding of the animals in their care.

Experienced volunteers are equally encouraged to join. BARC’s Tiered Program takes into account not only the time dedicated to the shelter but also the wealth of critter know-how that volunteers may bring. Whether you’re a long-time Houston resident or a newcomer to the area, BARC ensures that you will be placed in the tier that best aligns with your abilities.

Individuals interested in making a positive impact in their community by volunteering at BARC can sign up today at BARC’s Volunteer Page or reach out via email to to learn more about supporting the local animal shelter. BARC looks forward to welcoming new volunteers in the spirit of compassion and care for animals in need.
