Austin Police Release Video, Details After Officer Shoots Teen Suspect During Pursuit

The Austin Police Department is continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, October 12, 2025, in North Austin. The incident began shortly after midnight when Officer James McKinney witnessed gunfire coming from the passenger side of a moving vehicle near Northgate Boulevard and Rundberg Lane.
Officer McKinney immediately notified dispatch and began following the suspect vehicle while additional officers responded to check the area for possible victims. Although no victims were found, ballistic evidence was recovered at the scene.
The pursuit led to the 9200 block of Parkfield Drive, where the suspect vehicle slowed at a stop sign. Officer McKinney exited his patrol unit, identified himself as Austin Police, and gave commands for the vehicle to stop. The officer’s spotlight was activated, but his overhead lights and siren were not on at the time. As the suspect vehicle began turning west onto Quail Park Drive, Officer McKinney fired two shots toward the vehicle.
After the shots were fired, Officer McKinney lost sight of the car and began searching the area. The vehicle was later located parked in the 1200 block of Quailfield Circle. Inside, officers found a 16-year-old juvenile male in the passenger seat suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Officers rendered first aid until EMS arrived. The teen was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Four other suspects fled from the vehicle on foot. Three were later taken into custody and identified as:
- Jose Aguirre-Guevara, 23, charged with Evading in a Motor Vehicle (3rd Degree Felony)
- Doriah Joseph Almendares Santos, 17, charged with Evading on Foot (Class A Misdemeanor)
- A 14-year-old male, also charged with Evading on Foot (Class A Misdemeanor)
One suspect remains outstanding.
Officer McKinney, who has been with the department for one year and five months, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
APD officials said the incident was captured on both body-worn and in-car dash cameras. The department has released video footage, police radio audio, and a map showing the location of the incident in coordination with the Office of Police Oversight and the Travis County District Attorney’s Office. The video includes graphic content and language, and viewer discretion is advised.
The department emphasized that two investigations are underway: a criminal investigation by APD’s Special Investigations Unit with assistance from the District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative review by APD’s Internal Affairs Unit with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
The Austin Police Department stated it remains committed to transparency and accountability as it works to maintain public trust during the ongoing investigation.
