Austin Police Department Releases Details and Video Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

The Austin Police Department (APD) is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on November 11, 2023, at 9308 Bernoulli Drive. In a press release issued today, APD emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in sharing information about critical incidents.

According to the statement, the incident unfolded when a distress call was received at 2:49 a.m. from a caller at the Bernoulli Drive address, reporting a stabbing. The caller, later identified as a victim of the suspect, managed to escape before officers arrived.

Upon arriving at approximately 2:57 a.m., patrol officers were informed of two injured individuals inside the residence with the suspect, identified as Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Nassar. At 3:00 a.m., officers initiated an emergency entry to rescue the victims, announcing their presence. However, they were fired upon by Mr. Nassar upon entry.

As Mr. Nassar barricaded himself inside with two hostages, a SWAT callout was initiated at 3:06 a.m. At around 4:11 a.m., SWAT officers made an emergency entry, prompting Mr. Nassar to open fire. In the ensuing exchange, Officers Jared Carruth, Kevin Olejar, and Sergeant Kevin DeLaRue returned fire.

At 4:15 a.m., it was reported over the police radio that two officers were shot. Despite immediate efforts from officers and EMS Tactical Medics, Officer Jorge “George” Pastore succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.

The second injured officer was admitted to the hospital at 4:39 a.m., treated, and later released. Two apparent victims inside the residence, Ms. Eyman Elnemrnassar and Mr. Riad Nassar, were pronounced deceased on the scene. Mr. Ahmed Nassar, the suspect, also succumbed to his injuries on-site.

The incident, captured on officers’ body-worn cameras, is under investigation through two parallel probes: a criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and an administrative investigation by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, overseen by the Office of Police Oversight.

In accordance with state law and to maintain the investigation’s integrity, certain materials have been redacted from the released videos. The footage includes comprehensive coverage of the officers’ actions and contains graphic content and language. Viewer discretion is advised.
