Charges have been filed against Raishard Jamal Potts, 23, in connection with the fatal shooting of Terrance Lewis, 20, on June 15, 2022. Potts faces a murder charge in the 208th State District Court.

Houston Police Department (HPD) patrol officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex located at 6215 Tierwester Street around 3:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Lewis in the entry to an apartment, where he had sustained a gunshot wound. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Further investigation revealed that Lewis, along with a co-worker, was at a co-worker’s apartment cooking food for homeless individuals. Both were employed by a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing food for and feeding the homeless in the city. Lewis was walking back to the apartment after disposing of trash when an unidentified male suspect fired shots from the parking lot of the complex.

As of the initial investigation, there is no known motive for the shooting.

Subsequent inquiries led to the identification of Raishard Jamal Potts as the suspect in the case. Potts is currently held in the Harris County Jail on an unrelated charge. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was consulted, and on January 19, a murder charge was officially filed against Potts in connection with the death of Terrance Lewis.
