HOUSTON – A 17-year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting incident that led to an officer discharging his weapon at an apartment complex in the Sharpstown area Thursday night, October 9.

The suspect, John Cesar Silva, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and aggravated assault of a family member in the 176th Criminal District Court.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded around 10:05 p.m. to reports of a shooting in progress at 6555 Harbor Town Drive. When they arrived, they found a woman on the ground outside the complex suffering from a gunshot wound. She told officers that her son was inside the apartment, armed and firing shots, and that her two daughters were also inside.

Officers attempted to make contact by knocking on the door and identifying themselves. Moments later, the suspect fired multiple shots through the door at the officers. Officer C. Santana, assigned to the HPD Midwest Patrol Division, returned fire. Santana, who joined the department in May 2017, was not injured.

After a brief standoff, Silva surrendered and was taken into custody. He had a gunshot wound to his right hand and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and filed charges against Silva. HPD’s Special Investigations Unit is handling the investigation, as is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
