Armed Felon Shot and Arrested After Firing at Houston Officers During Pursuit

Houston police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that unfolded Thursday morning after an armed suspect opened fire on pursuing officers in northwest Houston.

The incident began around 8:40 a.m., when HPD patrol units conducted a traffic stop in the 5000 block of Antoine Drive. Officers learned the driver, 33-year-old Jacques Otu Bassey, was wanted on a felony warrant. When officers moved to arrest him, Bassey sped off, sparking a pursuit.

During the chase, police say Bassey fired several rounds at officers, striking at least one marked patrol vehicle. The pursuit ended near Antoine Drive and West 34th Street when his vehicle left the roadway and hit several fixed objects. Bassey then bailed out and ran.

Officers searched the area, and one located Bassey behind a business at 5828 West 34th Street. Bassey fired multiple shots at that officer, who returned fire. A second officer arrived moments later and also fired. Bassey was hit at least once.

Houston Fire Department medics transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Bassey is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest with a motor vehicle. A booking photo has not yet been released.

The officers who fired their weapons, Officer R. Kloeppel and Officer M. Spinks of the North Patrol Division, were not injured. Both have been with HPD for several years.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the case is being reviewed by HPD’s Homicide Division, Internal Affairs, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
