Houston Airports Introduce Sensory Rooms for Enhanced Passenger Comfort and Inclusivity

n its ongoing effort to enhance airport accessibility, Houston Airports has introduced the first of several sensory rooms at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The newly opened sensory room is located within the Mother’s Room at Terminal A North, adjacent to the Breakfast Klub and a KRPC Travel Store.
Sensory rooms provide a quiet and controlled space for passengers, including those with developmental disorders, to find relief from the sensory stimuli of the airport environment. The Bush Airport sensory room features carefully designed elements such as soothing lighting, noise-reducing infrastructure, and comfortable seating to create a calming and supportive environment. This interactive space aims to assist neurodivergent travelers who may feel overwhelmed in a bustling and unfamiliar place. Access to the sensory room is facilitated by contacting the Airport Operations Center for entry.
Upon entering the Mother’s Room, passengers will encounter a room with a cipher lock and a sensory sign instructing them to contact 281-230-1300 for access. An Airport Operations Center team member will then provide the necessary code for entry.
Designed to cater to individuals with conditions like autism, dementia, or sensory processing issues, the Bush Airport sensory room includes features such as colorful touch-encouraging lighting, soothing bubble tubes, dimmable lighting, soundproof walls, and cozy seating to help passengers recenter.
Houston Airports plans to open additional sensory rooms in the newly refurbished and expanded Terminal D and at Hobby Airport. These sensory rooms are part of a broader suite of services aimed at providing assistance to passengers who may require extra support. In 2022, Houston Airports introduced Companion Care Changing Rooms, equipped with lifts, an adult-size changing table, and private bathroom facilities. Additionally, Mother’s Rooms are available for families seeking added privacy while feeding or tending to young children.
