18-Year-Old Woman Charged With Manslaughter in Fatal Houston Shooting of Boyfriend
HOUSTON – An 18-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with manslaughter more than six months after her boyfriend was fatally shot while the two were handling a firearm at a southwest Houston residence, police said.
Emily Perez, 18, is charged with manslaughter in the death of Diego Cornejo, also 18. The case is filed in the 183rd Criminal District Court.
Houston police responded at approximately 9:15 a.m. March 11 to a shooting at a residence in the 6000 block of Fondren Road in the Sharpstown area.
Officers found Cornejo suffering from a gunshot wound. Houston Fire Department paramedics transported him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to HPD Homicide Sgt. A. Lopez and Detective N. Sharp, investigators determined Cornejo was shot while he and his girlfriend were handling a firearm.
Police initially consulted with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, and the shooting was referred to a Harris County grand jury.
Authorities did not provide additional details about how the firearm discharged or what evidence led to the manslaughter charge.
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force arrested Perez. She was subsequently charged in connection with Cornejo’s death and booked into the Harris County Jail.
