Mother Charged After Investigation Into Deaths of Two Katy Toddlers, Captured in Florida

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A woman has been charged in connection with the deaths of her two young daughters following a months-long investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Monday, May 11, 2026, that homicide detectives charged 23-year-old Laura Catherine Nicholson with two counts of Injury to a Child related to the deaths of the toddlers.
Deputies originally responded on Feb. 11, 2026, at around 3:30 pm, to a residence in the 21000 block of Creek Edge Court in Katy after receiving a report involving the possible drowning of two female toddlers, believed to be approximately 2 and 3 years old. They were later identified as Kelsey and Kinsley Kite.
At the time, investigators said the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths were unclear, and homicide detectives opened an investigation.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigators later determined that both children had cocaine in their systems at the time of their deaths.
Authorities said Nicholson was formally charged on Friday, May 8.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office Violent Criminals Apprehension Team coordinated with the Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate and arrest Nicholson in Lee County, Florida.
Nicholson was booked into the Lee County Jail and will be extradited back to Harris County.
