TWC Marks White Cane Day with Celebration of Independence and Inclusion For The Blind

AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) hosted its annual White Cane Day celebration on October 15, recognizing the independence, achievements, and contributions of Texans who are blind or visually impaired.
Held at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the event aimed to educate the public about blindness and promote inclusion in workplaces and communities across the state.
“We’re honored to celebrate White Cane Day as a symbol of inclusivity for people who are blind or visually impaired,” said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. “By partnering with Texas employers to expand job training, internships, and other educational opportunities, we can empower Texans with disabilities to gain competitive skills and increase their employability.”
The program featured remarks from local and state leaders, including TWC Commissioners Alberto Treviño III and Brent Connett, both emphasizing the importance of accessibility, opportunity, and recognizing the resilience of the visually impaired community.
Festivities included a choir performance by students from TSBVI, a petting zoo, and more than 35 exhibitor booths. The public also joined two marches through Austin in celebration of White Cane Day, which coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month as part of TWC’s Texas HireAbility Campaign.
Next year’s White Cane Day celebration is scheduled for October 15, 2026.
