Suspect Extradited from Mexico in 2005 Fatal Shooting Case near Hobby Airport
Luis Uriel Castillo

Houston police have taken into custody a suspect charged in the fatal shooting of a man that occurred on January 10, 2005, at 8501 Broadway Street.

The suspect, 39-year-old Luis Uriel Castillo, is charged with capital murder in the 263rd Criminal District Court. A booking photo of Castillo has been released by HPD.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Cornelius Ray, was discovered by apartment management after friends expressed concern that they had not been able to reach him for several days. Officers responding to the welfare check found Mr. Ray lying on his bedroom floor. He had suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department personnel.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R. Rodriguez and Detective D. Shorten reported that Castillo was charged in January 2005 but fled to Mexico shortly after the incident. The case remained open for years as investigators sought to locate him.

In 2021, the FBI successfully located Castillo in Mexico. On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, he was extradited back to the United States and taken into custody by HPD Homicide Division Cold Case Unit detectives. Castillo was interviewed by investigators before being booked into the Harris County Jail.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Ray’s death remains active. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the HPD Homicide Division.
