HOUSTON – A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a fatal shooting Tuesday night in southwest Houston.

Angel Ortiz, 21, is charged with murder in the 179th Criminal District Court in connection with the death of a 20-year-old man whose identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded around 9 p.m. on September 30 to a residence in the 8400 block of Bonner Drive following reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive male in the driveway with a gunshot wound. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators learned that the victim and Ortiz were talking when Ortiz allegedly picked up a rifle, pointed it at the victim, then lowered it, chambered a round, and fired—striking the victim. Ortiz initially fled the scene but later returned, where he was detained by police.

Ortiz reportedly told detectives the shooting was accidental. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, investigators filed a murder charge, and Ortiz was booked into the Harris County Jail.

The investigation remains ongoing.
