Man Fatally Shot After Forcing Entry into Ex-Girlfriend’s Houston Apartment

A 49-year-old man was fatally shot after forcibly entering his ex-girlfriend’s apartment early Thursday morning, February 13, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 AM at 12459 West Village Drive, Unit #C.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting during a break-in attempt. Upon arrival, they found the man, identified as Wilbert Tayes, with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations revealed that Tayes had been exhibiting aggressive behavior toward his ex-girlfriend, who resided in the apartment with her 24-year-old son and other family members. On the night of the incident, Tayes attempted to kick in the front door. After gaining entry, he reportedly tried to assault the son, who then retrieved a firearm and shot Tayes twice in self-defense.

The case is currently under investigation and will be referred to a grand jury for further review.
