Homicide Investigation in Harris County Leads to Murder Charge After Shooting at Hop n’ Shop Mini Mart
On Monday, December 16, 2024, at approximately 11:53 AM, Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) District 3 Patrol Deputies responded to a “shooting victim” call at the Hop n’ Shop Mini Mart, located at 704 Sheldon Road in Channelview. Upon arrival, deputies found 45-year-old Marcos Mata at a nearby homeless camp, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of EMS personnel, Mata was pronounced dead at the scene.
HCSO deputies detained several individuals from the camp, including the suspected shooter, 32-year-old Stormie Crummel. During an interview, Crummel admitted to shooting Mata, claiming it was in self-defense.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division, along with Crime Scene Investigators, responded to the scene and began their investigation.
UPDATE: On Monday, January 13, 2025, HCSO homicide detectives charged Stormie Crummel with Murder in connection with the shooting death of Marcos Mata. Additionally, 27-year-old Brannon Brewer was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Both Crummel and Brewer were arrested without incident by the Harris County Violent Crimes Apprehension Team (VCAT) and booked into Harris County Jail.
