Man Dies in Custody After Police Tasing and Ingesting Unknown Narcotic
A man, aged 38, has died while in custody of the Houston police, following an incident on Sunday morning at around 8:45 a.m. in the 11000 block of Sageleaf Lane. The cause of death and the man’s identity are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
According to reports, HPD patrol officers were responding to a public lewdness call at the mentioned address when they encountered the man behaving erratically. It is reported that the man ingested a substance believed to be narcotics. Upon attempting to detain him, the man resisted arrest and sustained a leg injury after breaking a glass window.
Officers then used conducted energy devices (Tasers) to subdue the combative individual and subsequently detained him. Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene to treat the man’s leg injury. However, during treatment, the man became unresponsive.
Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased by doctors. Following standard procedure for in-custody deaths, the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division are conducting an administrative investigation into the incident.
