Harris County Sheriff Releases Video of January Fatal Shooting After Man Cuts Deputy With Knife

HOUSTON – The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has released video from a January confrontation at a METRO Rail platform that ended with two deputies fatally shooting a man who authorities say cut one of them with a knife.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the METRO Rail platform at 7800 Fulton Street in Houston.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a woman approached deputies at the platform and reported that a man had exposed himself.

Two deputies approached the man, later identified as Tydarius Brion Haynes, and attempted to detain him.

A struggle followed.

The Sheriff’s Office said the newly released video shows Haynes using a knife to cut one of the deputies during the confrontation. Both deputies then fired their service weapons, striking Haynes.

Emergency medical personnel treated Haynes at the scene before transporting him to LBJ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Houston Police Department is investigating the shooting. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is conducting a separate investigation, as is standard when a deputy uses deadly force. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence from the investigations to a grand jury.

The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also conducting an administrative review to determine whether the deputies acted in accordance with department policies and procedures.

The Sheriff’s Office released relevant video from the shooting to the public, warning that the footage contains graphic and sensitive content.
