Security Guard Arrested After Green Laser Strikes Texas DPS Aircraft During Manhunt
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A security guard was arrested after allegedly pointing a high-intensity green laser at a Texas Department of Public Safety aircraft while its crew was assisting law enforcement officers with a manhunt.
According to DPS, the aircrew was supporting law enforcement operations when the aircraft was struck by a green laser from the ground.
The laser created a potential danger for the pilots and others involved in the operation. High-intensity lasers can cause glare, temporary blindness and disorientation, potentially affecting a pilot’s ability to safely operate an aircraft.
DPS Aircraft Cameras Locate Suspect
The DPS aircrew used the aircraft’s daylight and thermal imaging cameras to determine where the laser was coming from.
Video captured the laser striking the aircraft, and the crew traced its source to an individual in a nearby parking lot.
According to DPS, the individual appeared to be working as an on-site security guard based on a security patch visible on his clothing.
The aircrew directed Harris County deputies to the location, where they found and detained the individual. Authorities also located and confiscated the laser allegedly used during the incident.
Two Charges Filed
The individual was subsequently arrested and charged with two misdemeanor offenses:
- Illumination of Aircraft by Intense Light
- Armed Security Guard Without a Security Officer Commission
The suspect’s identity was not provided in the information released by DPS.
Authorities emphasized that pointing a laser at an aircraft can put not only the flight crew in danger but also officers working on the ground and members of the public.
“Never point a laser at an aircraft,” DPS warned. “What may seem like a momentary action from the ground can create a potentially deadly situation in the air, and it can result in serious criminal charges.”
