Houston Man Dies Following Bicycle Crash in MacGregor Area, Driver of Vehicle Charged

A 62-year-old male cyclist, critically injured in a crash on Saturday evening, has tragically succumbed to his injuries, according to the Houston Police Department.

The identity of the deceased male remains pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, at the 5900 block of Scottcrest Drive.

Reports indicate that the cyclist was traveling eastbound in the 3900 block of Old Spanish Trail and, allegedly, against a red traffic light. At the same time, a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, operated by 66-year-old John Washington, was heading northbound on Scottcrest Drive. As the pickup entered the intersection of Old Spanish Trail, it collided with the bicyclist.

Washington, the driver of the pickup truck, stopped at the scene of the accident. However, he was later evaluated and found to be impaired. Subsequently, he was charged with driving while intoxicated in Harris County Criminal Court #7 and was booked into the Harris County Jail.

Emergency medical personnel from the Houston Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene to provide aid and transport the injured cyclist to Ben Taub General Hospital. Tragically, despite the medical attention, the man’s condition continued to worsen, and he was pronounced deceased on Monday, October 16.
