Man Arrested With AR-Style Weapon After Gunfire Erupts in Bastrop Home Depot Parking Lot

BASTROP, Texas — A 25-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday after opening fire in the parking lot of a Home Depot located in the 100 block of Hunters Crossing Blvd, prompting a large law enforcement response, police said.
Officers with the Bastrop Police Department, along with multiple surrounding agencies, responded the afternoon of March 25, 2026, at approximately 3:49 pm, to reports of an active shooter at the store.

Preliminary information indicates the suspect, identified as Kobe Lee Mosser, drove into the parking lot and began firing an AR-15-style rifle indiscriminately. Authorities said he exited his vehicle at one point and continued shooting.
Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries were reported.
The first officer to arrive, Officer James Hill, engaged the suspect and took him into custody without further incident. Hill was accompanied by Victim Services liaison Shannon Merritt.
“First, I and the members of our staff are extremely thankful that, despite the seriousness of this incident, no injuries have been reported,” said Bastrop Police Chief Vicky Steffanic.
Officials said the extent of property damage and the number of affected victims, including reports involving families with children, remains under investigation.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone who was in the area or has information to contact bpdcommunity@cityofbastrop.org.
