Galveston Police Officers Hospitalized After Training Incident at Schlitterbahn

GALVESTON, TX – Two Galveston Police Department officers were hospitalized Wednesday morning, September 3, after an incident during a swift water rescue training exercise at Schlitterbahn.

The training, hosted by the Houston Fire Department, involved members of GPD’s marine/dive team. During the exercise, two officers lost their footing and were pulled underwater, prompting immediate rescue efforts from fellow participants.

The Galveston Fire Department and Galveston EMS responded quickly, providing lifesaving medical aid. One officer was transported to UTMB by police unit, while the other was transported by EMS.

Both officers are reported to be in good condition.

“I want to personally thank the quick-thinking officers on scene and the rapid, professional response from our Fire and EMS partners,” said Galveston Police Chief Douglas Balli. “Their actions ensured that lives were saved today.”

Update: One officer has since been treated and released. The second officer remains admitted at UTMB in good condition for additional observation.
