Bank Robbery Suspect Apprehended by Austin Police
On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at around 2:06 p.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) swiftly responded to a bank robbery call at the Comerica Bank located at 2315 East Anderson Lane. The suspect, identified as Derrick Nix, entered the bank and forcibly guided a customer to the teller station, demanding money and threatening those around him. Nix managed to flee the scene in a red Ford Escape, carrying an undisclosed sum of money.
Robbery detectives promptly gathered video evidence from the bank and shared a suspect description with uniformed officers. Nix was described as a black male with a heavy build, wearing a pink shirt, a white tank top underneath, black pants, black shoes, a two-toned head-wrap, and two watches (one on each wrist). He was also carrying a backpack.
APD Patrol officers secured the area and began searching for Nix. During the search, officers located his vehicle at a nearby convenience store, where they attempted to detain him. Nix, however, fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, officers successfully apprehended him.
Upon his arrest, Nix was found in possession of illegal drugs and stolen cash from the bank. He cooperated with detectives, making several admissions regarding the bank robbery. Nix is a known robbery suspect and is currently on federal supervised release. He has a history of armed robberies, with prior convictions in Austin in 2005 for an armed robbery of a Wells Fargo bank and in 2014 for two armed robberies on the same day, one at Chase Bank and the other at the former Capital One Bank.
