Man Killed in Assault Outside Kerbey Lane Cafe in Austin

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at approximately 10:16 p.m., Austin Police Department officers and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services responded to the parking lot of the Kerbey Lane restaurant at 3003 S. Lamar Boulevard.

Officers located a male victim on the ground, later identified as 23-year-old Mark Barbosa. Despite life-saving efforts by medics, Barbosa was pronounced deceased at 10:40 p.m.

According to investigators, Barbosa was at the location to pick up his girlfriend. 21-year-old Jacob Turner, who had also arrived to pick up his girlfriend along with a friend, confronted Barbosa. The altercation escalated, and Turner physically assaulted Barbosa, causing him to fall near a blue Nissan. Turner, his friend, and his girlfriend then left the scene in that vehicle.

Barbosa’s cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and ruled a homicide.

Jacob Turner was later arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail for First Degree Murder.
