Second Suspect Arrested in February Setting Sun Murder Case in El Paso

El Paso police have arrested a second individual, Howard Chevard Dyron Brock, 21, in connection with the murder of Edward Daquan Smith, 23, who was found fatally shot on February 28, 2025. Brock, a Fort Bliss resident, was taken into custody on June 9, 2025, with the assistance of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, and charged with murder. His bond has been set at $1,000,000 by Judge Acosta.

This arrest follows the initial apprehension of Eric Lamarr Mathis, 24, a Central El Paso resident, on March 24, 2025. Mathis was also charged with murder in connection to Smith’s death and is being held on a $1,500,000 bond set by Judge Sullivan.

The investigation began on February 28, 2025, when police responded to a shooting at the 2100 block of Setting Sun at approximately 11:58 PM. Officers arrived to find Edward Daquan Smith with a gunshot wound. Fire Medical Services were requested, but Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Crimes Against Persons detectives have been actively investigating the case, leading to these two arrests.
